Leader speaking directly and conversationally to a small group in an office setting

The Necessity of Personalization in Executive Communication

SCRIPTS DON’T CONNECT. CONVERSATIONS DO.
BY ANETT GRANT

Every day our experiences get intensely curated. We expect Amazon to know exactly what we want to buy. We expect Netflix to queue up the perfect show. We expect Alexa to deliver a playlist we actually like. As these experiences get highly personalized, our expectations for every interaction go straight up. I see leaders completely miss this shift when they step up to a podium or a boardroom table. Many assume they need to put on corporate armor and deliver a perfectly sterile message. They read the official script perfectly. The result is total disconnection. The audience simply tunes out. I’ve watched brilliant executives lose their listeners in the first two minutes because they forgot one simple reality. Audiences today demand speaking that feels incredibly personal. They don’t want the generic company line. They want the personal truth delivered from a confident leader authentically. You’ll never achieve that connection if you stick to an outdated model of corporate speech. You need a conversational speaking style to break through the noise.

The Danger of the Official Script

The demand for a conversational speaking style represents a fundamental shift in how people consume information. Recent data from McKinsey reveals that 71 percent of consumers expect companies to deliver personalized interactions, and 76 percent get frustrated when this doesn’t happen. That same frustration happens in the room when you present. Your listeners are the exact same consumers. When you give them a generic presentation, they feel disconnected and frustrated.

Many leaders mistakenly believe that professionalism requires formality. I completely disagree. Professionalism today requires intimacy. When you hide behind dense corporate jargon, you sound like a robot. You distance yourself from the people you need to influence. You might think you’re projecting authority, but you’re just projecting distance. This disconnect happens constantly in high-stakes meetings. An executive will stand up and start speaking in the passive voice. They use complex structures to sound smart. The problem is that nobody actually talks that way in real life. Your audience wants to feel like they’re having a direct interaction with you. When your words sound like they were drafted by a legal committee, your credibility actually drops. People want to know the real person driving the message. They want to hear things your way.

Dropping the Passive Voice for Real Connection

If you want to master a conversational speaking style, you must look at how you naturally speak to your friends. You’d never walk into your kitchen and say, “Decisions were made to go to Montreal for our vacation.” You’d say, “We made the decision to go to Montreal for a vacation.” The first sentence is formal and passive. The second is active, clear, and human.

A few months ago, a senior Vice President of Operations came to me for help. He had a massive presentation for his global team. He brought me a twenty-page script filled with endless passive sentences. He sounded like a textbook. We spent our first session completely breaking down that script. I told him he had to stop trying to sound like a corporate document. We stripped away the jargon and focused on the actual feeling he wanted to communicate. In the moment, he stopped reading and started talking to me. His natural warmth came out. He found real clarity and confidence once he stopped worrying about sounding official.

This is where structure makes a massive difference. Many presenters rely on dense bullet points to remember their content. That forces you into an unnatural rhythm. In my work with clients, I teach them to use our proprietary Core Satellite System. This framework allows you to organize your thoughts around a central key point instead of a linear script. You can orbit that central idea naturally. You retain the freedom to speak conversationally while ensuring your message stays entirely on track. You never have to memorize a single passive sentence again.

This structure prevents you from getting lost under pressure. When you’re presenting to the board, your adrenaline spikes. A script will fail you because you’ll just try to recite words. An organized, central idea gives you the anchor you need. You simply talk about the concepts as you would across a dinner table. That is how you command attention.

Finding Your Unique Voice

You might worry that being conversational means being casual. That is a completely false assumption. You can be deeply authoritative while remaining highly accessible. Think about the most effective leaders you know. They engage with you directly. They make complex business strategies sound like completely natural conversations.

Achieving this flow takes deliberate practice. You must actively choose active verbs. You must cut the filler that weighs down your sentences. When you speak in a conversational style, your communication will flow effortlessly. You’ll connect with the emotion behind your data. You’ll make that critical personal connection with your audience. This approach transforms a standard update into a memorable leadership moment.

I see this transformation happen regularly in our Advanced Leadership Speaking program. Executives walk in believing they need to reinvent their entire personality to be great speakers. They leave realizing they just needed to remove the corporate filters blocking their natural voice. If you want to explore more strategies on building this connection, you can always browse our articles for additional insights.

Here’s a surprising truth about corporate communication. The harder you try to sound like an expert, the less people believe you. True experts don’t need to hide behind complicated vocabulary. They explain complex problems in the simplest terms possible. When you drop the heavy jargon, you actually project far more confidence. People trust leaders who speak plainly. They trust leaders who sound human.

Make the Personal Connection

Speaking personally is no longer optional. The expectation for personalization is multiplying across every part of our lives. Your audience wants the real you. They want a leader who speaks directly to them.

When you finally drop the script, your communication will flow. You’ll connect with the feeling that you’re trying to communicate. You’ll build a lasting personal connection with the room.
